Ukrainians are lucky to have a capital city without equal.

Kyiv is an eternal city. Our distant ancestors surrounded it with the powerful and enigmatic Zmiyevyi mounds some two thousand years ago. Scientists still have not solved the mystery of these constructions.

Kyiv is our sacred city. In olden times thousands of piligrims came here (always on Foot) and, upon seeing from far away the golden tops of Kyiv`s churches, bowed to the ground.

There are many stories and fairy tales about Kyiv. Who has not heard the tales about Kyiv`s hero Kyrylo the Tanner? From the times of the princes of Kyiv Rus` come stories about Kyiv`s Fairy Dobrada and wonderful poetic legends about Prince Kyi, his brothers, and their sister Lybid`; about the Golden Gate and the knight Mykhailyk; about the remarkable caves and cathedrals of St. Lavra; and many, many others. Kyiv is a city of legends: people have always composed stjries about it, and continue to do so today. I hope that the stories from this book inspire yjur interest in Kyiv.
