Symon Petliura and the jewry

Professor of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, member of the Ukrainian Higher Education Academy of Science.

He was born on March 13, 1950 in Pryberezhne, a village in the Zhytomyr region. He graduated from the Journalism Department of the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko State University in 1972 and the Economics Department of the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy in 1977. Till 1987 he worked on the editorial staff of the «Silski Visti > newspaper.

He presented his candidate thesis "People's Army in Ukraine at the Time of 1648-1654 Liberation War (Organization, Armament, Ordnance)'   in 1982 and the doctor thesis 'Ukrainian Cossack Army in the Second Half of the 16th — Mid -17th Centuries — in 1992. He is investi­gating problems of history of Ukraine, in particular of the Ukrainian Cossacks, of Ukrainian settlements in various parts of the world, of national minorities in Ukraine, of activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Rebel Army, of Ukrainians' contribution to the development of world science and culture. Professor V. Serhiychuk has published 25 books, among them: National Symbols of Ukraine» (1992), «Army of Bohdan Khmelnytsky» (1996), «Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and Ukrainian Rebel Army during World War ll» (1996), «Ethnic Boundaries and State Borders of Ukraine » (1996), «Pogroms in Ukraine. 1914-1920» (1998).
